Joint
Council is thrilled to present An Evening with Alison Larkin,
internationally acclaimed comedienne, adoptee and author of the
best-selling novel The English American. Ms. Larkin’s hilarious
performance, reading and book signing will be held on March 27, 2009,
the first evening of the Joint Council Conference at the Hyatt Regency
Indianapolis.
Ms. Larkin
was adopted at birth in Washington, D.C. by British parents and raised
in England and Africa. In her mid-twenties, she found her birth parents
in the United States.
Both a
classically trained actress and a stand-up comic, Ms. Larkin transformed
her experience into a one-woman comedy titled The English American
and later, a semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. Both have
received stunning reviews for their authentic, touching look at the
issues faced by many adoptees—including identity, heredity and
self-acceptance.
Recently,
The English American was featured as Redbook Magazine’s
“Book Club Pick of the Month” and as one of Vogue Magazine's
“most powerful books of the season.” ABC TV has optioned The English
American for a half-hour television series with the Mark Gordon
Company attached to produce.
More
information about Ms. Larkin is available via her website at
www.alisonlarkin.com. The website also contains a section on
adoptee support.
An
Evening with Alison Larkin will occur in conjunction with Joint
Council’s Annual Conference, a gathering of intercountry adoption and
child welfare professionals to share their experience and insight in the
field. The event will be complimentary to all event attendees. Complete Conference information can be found online at
http://www.jcics.org/Conference.htm.
An Evening with Alison Larkin will
also be open to the public. Tickets may
be purchased from 4 to 7 pm the afternoon of the event for $20
each in the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis atrium (1 South Capitol Avenue,
Indianapolis, IN).We hope you will join us for what promises to be a lively and
poignant look at the adoptee experience.
